French conjugation explanation
Affirmative vs. negative commands
<p>In French, the placement of object pronouns (direct, indirect, and reflexive) depends entirely on whether the command is <strong>affirmative</strong> or <strong>negative</strong>.</p>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">1. Affirmative Commands</div>
<p>In an <strong>affirmative command</strong> (telling someone <em>to do</em> something), the pronoun is placed <strong>after the verb</strong> and attached with a <strong>hyphen</strong>.</p>

</ul>
<p><strong>Important Spelling Change:</strong> The pronouns <span style="font-style: italic;">me</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">te</span> change to the stressed forms <strong>moi</strong> and <strong>toi</strong> in the affirmative imperative.</p>

</ul>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">2. Negative Commands</div>
<p>In a <strong>negative command</strong> (telling someone <em>not</em> to do something), the word order returns to normal. The pronoun is placed <strong>before the verb</strong>, between <span style="font-style: italic;">ne</span> and the verb. No hyphens are used, and <span style="font-style: italic;">moi/toi</span> revert to <span style="font-style: italic;">me/te</span>.</p>

<p>This rule is most clearly seen with reflexive verbs. In the tables below using <span style="font-style: italic;">se laver</span> (to wash oneself), notice how the pronoun moves and how <span style="font-style: italic;">te</span> changes to <span style="font-style: italic;">toi</span>.</p>
