French conjugation explanation
Word order in negative infinitive
<p>One of the most common syntax errors for English speakers learning French involves negating the <strong>infinitive</strong> form of a verb. In English, the negation "not" is often placed inside the structure (e.g., "to <strong>not</strong> eat" or "not to eat").</p>
<p>In French, the rule depends on the state of the verb structure:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Conjugated Verb:</strong> The negation surrounds the verb (sandwich structure).<br />Ex: <span style="font-style: italic;">Je <strong>ne</strong> mange <strong>pas</strong>.</span></li>
<li><strong>Infinitive:</strong> Both negation markers stay <strong>together before</strong> the verb.<br />Ex: <span style="font-style: italic;">J'ai décidé de <span class="green_emphasis">ne pas manger</span>.</span></li>
</ul>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">The Rule: Ne pas + Infinitive</div>
<p>When negating the infinitive, <span style="font-style: italic;">ne</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">pas</span> stay attached to each other and precede the verb.</p>
