Inversion with "pouvoir"
<p>When forming questions using inversion in the
<a class="conjugation_explanation_link_intext" href="/study/tenseGuideForTense/25/" target="_blank">Present Indicative</a>
, the verb generally remains the same, and is placed before the subject pronoun. However, the verb<a class="conjugation_explanation_link_intext verb_link" href="/study/conjugations/fra/pouvoir/" title="Click to see conjugations for pouvoir" target="_blank">pouvoir</a>
(<span style="font-style: italic;">to be able to / can</span>) has a significant exception in the first person singular.</p><div class="conjugation_explanation_title">The Rule</div>
<p>Although the affirmative form is <span style="font-style: italic;">je peux</span>, it is technically impossible in standard French to say <span class="red_emphasis" style="text-decoration: line-through;">peux-je</span> due to pronunciation difficulties (euphony). Instead, the form changes completely to <strong class="green_emphasis">puis-je</strong>.</p>

<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">Formality and Alternatives</div>
<p>Using <span style="font-style: italic;">Puis-je</span> is very formal and polite. It is the equivalent of the English "May I?". In less formal contexts, you can avoid this irregularity by using <span style="font-style: italic;">est-ce que</span>, which preserves the standard form <span style="font-style: italic;">je peux</span>.</p>
