Past participle formation

The German
Past Participle
(or Partizip II) is a crucial verb form used to construct compound tenses like the Perfekt, Plusquamperfekt, and the passive voice. Its formation depends on whether the verb is weak (regular), strong (irregular), or mixed.

Weak verbs (Regular)

Weak verbs are the most common and easiest to conjugate. To form the past participle, we generally add the prefix ge- to the stem and the ending -t. The stem vowel does not change.

Strong verbs (Irregular)

Strong verbs usually undergo a vowel change in the stem. Their distinctive feature in the past participle is the ending -en (instead of -t). Like weak verbs, they typically begin with ge-.

For some strong verbs, the stem vowel remains the same as the infinitive:

Mixed verbs

Mixed verbs are a small but important group that combines characteristics of both weak and strong verbs. They have a stem vowel change (like strong verbs) but take the ending -t (like weak verbs).
