Introduction

This special German verb form is used for things that are not a direct reality. You use it to talk about wishes, polite requests, suggestions, and imaginary situations. It helps you sound less direct and describes "what could be" instead of "what is".

The most common use is for making polite requests and statements. It makes you sound much softer and more courteous than using a direct command or statement.

Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
(I would like a coffee.)
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
(Could you please help me?)
Ich würde das anders machen.
(I would do that differently.)
Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen?
(Would you please close the window?)
Das wäre eine gute Idee.
(That would be a good idea.)

You also use this form to express wishes. It shows you are talking about something you want but do not have, or a situation that is not currently true.

Ach, ich wäre jetzt gern am Strand.
(Oh, I wish I were at the beach now.)
Er hätte gern mehr Freizeit.
(He would like to have more free time.)
Wir würden gern in einem großen Haus wohnen.
(We would love to live in a big house.)

It is perfect for giving friendly advice or suggestions. It feels less like a command and more like a helpful recommendation.

Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken.
(You should drink more water.)
Es wäre besser, früher zu gehen.
(It would be better to go earlier.)
An deiner Stelle würde ich das Buch lesen.
(If I were you, I would read the book.)

Use this form to talk about situations that are imaginary or not real. It separates these ideas from facts or real events.

Ich würde um die Welt reisen.
(I would travel around the world.)
Mit mehr Geld hätte ich ein schnelles Auto.
(With more money, I would have a fast car.)
Sie wäre eine tolle Ärztin.
(She would be a great doctor.)

A less common use is for reporting information indirectly. It can show that you are just repeating what someone said, without confirming it as a fact.

Der Nachbar sagte, er käme später.
(The neighbor said he would come later.)
Sie dachte, sie wäre allein im Haus.
(She thought she was alone in the house.)

You will very often see this tense formed with the verb "würden" plus another verb at the end of the sentence (like "Ich würde gehen"). This is a very common and easy way to use this form for many situations.
