Introduction
This special German verb form is used for things that are not a direct reality. You use it to talk about wishes, polite requests, suggestions, and imaginary situations. It helps you sound less direct and describes "what could be" instead of "what is".
The most common use is for making polite requests and statements. It makes you sound much softer and more courteous than using a direct command or statement.
You also use this form to express wishes. It shows you are talking about something you want but do not have, or a situation that is not currently true.
It is perfect for giving friendly advice or suggestions. It feels less like a command and more like a helpful recommendation.
Use this form to talk about situations that are imaginary or not real. It separates these ideas from facts or real events.
A less common use is for reporting information indirectly. It can show that you are just repeating what someone said, without confirming it as a fact.
You will very often see this tense formed with the verb "würden" plus another verb at the end of the sentence (like "Ich würde gehen"). This is a very common and easy way to use this form for many situations.
