Imperativ (Imperative)
Practice conjugation drills
Introduction
The Imperativ is used to tell someone to do something. You use it to give a direct command, make a request, or provide instructions. It is the "command form" of a verb.
The most common use is for giving direct commands or orders. This is when you want someone to perform an action immediately.
You also use the Imperativ to give instructions or directions. This is very common in recipes, manuals, or when telling someone how to get somewhere.
To make a command sound more like friendly advice or a suggestion, you can add words like doch or mal. It softens the tone.
When you add the word bitte, a command becomes a polite request. This is extremely common in everyday German.
Choosing the correct form is very important for politeness. Use the formal "Sie" form with strangers, in business settings, or to show respect. Using the informal "du" form with someone you should address formally can be considered rude.
The Imperativ is also used for warnings and prohibitions, often to prevent something bad from happening.
Finally, you will hear the Imperativ in common phrases for wishes or encouragement.
