Introduction
This tense describes an action that will be in progress at a specific moment in the future. Think of it as the future version of "is doing" or "are doing". It emphasizes the ongoing nature of a future event.
The most common use is to talk about something that will be happening at a precise time in the future. You are looking ahead to a specific moment and describing the action that will be taking place right then.
Mañana a las diez, yo estaré trabajando.
(Tomorrow at ten, I will be working.)
Cuando llegues a la fiesta, nosotros ya estaremos bailando.
(When you get to the party, we will already be dancing.)
No me llames a las ocho porque estaré cenando con mi familia.
(Don't call me at eight because I will be having dinner with my family.)
Este fin de semana, ellos estarán pintando la casa.
(This weekend, they will be painting the house.)
A esta misma hora la próxima semana, tú estarás viajando a México.
(At this same time next week, you will be traveling to Mexico.)
This tense is also used to make a guess or assumption about what someone is doing right now. It expresses what you think is probably happening at the moment of speaking.
María no contesta el teléfono. Estará durmiendo.
(Maria isn't answering the phone. She's probably sleeping.)
Los niños están muy callados. Estarán jugando un videojuego.
(The children are very quiet. They must be playing a video game.)
¿Por qué hay tanto tráfico? — No sé, la gente estará saliendo del trabajo ahora.
(Why is there so much traffic? — I don't know, people are probably leaving work now.)
Mi jefe no está en su oficina. Estará tomando un café.
(My boss isn't in his office. He's probably having a coffee.)
You can also use this tense to emphasize that a future action will continue for a period of time, not just happen at a single point. It highlights the duration.
Durante todo el verano, yo estaré trabajando en este proyecto.
(During the whole summer, I will be working on this project.)
El próximo año, ellos estarán viviendo en España.
(Next year, they will be living in Spain.)
