Introduction

This verb form describes an action that might be in progress at an uncertain time in the future. It expresses a hypothetical or imaginary situation that could be happening. This form always uses two words to express the idea.

IMPORTANT: This verb form is extremely rare in modern Spanish. You will almost never hear it in conversation or see it in normal writing. It appears mostly in old legal documents or very formal, old-fashioned literature. This guide helps you recognize it, but you will not need to use it yourself.

The main use is to describe a hypothetical, ongoing action that serves as a condition for something else. It often appears after words like 'if' (`si`) or 'whoever' (`quien`). Think of it as "if someone were to have been doing something..". or "whoever might have been doing something.."..

La sanción será para quien hubiere estado operando la máquina sin autorización.
(The penalty will be for whoever might have been operating the machine without authorization.)
Si al final del día alguien hubiere estado esperando, ofrécele una compensación.
(If at the end of the day someone happens to have been waiting, offer them compensation.)
El que hubiere estado viviendo en esa casa antes, dejó todo muy limpio.
(Whoever may have been living in that house before left everything very clean.)
Cualquiera que hubiere estado causando problemas será expulsado.
(Anyone who might have been causing trouble will be removed.)
