Introduction

This verb tense is used to talk about a past action that happened before another past action. It often appears after words that express opinions, doubts, feelings, or wishes about that earlier past event.

The most common use is to express an opinion, belief, or feeling in the past about something that happened even earlier. The main thought is in the past, and this tense describes the action before it.

Pensavo che tu fossi già partito.
(I thought that you had already left.)
Credevo che voi aveste capito la lezione.
(I believed that you had understood the lesson.)
Era felice che noi fossimo andati alla sua festa.
(He was happy that we had gone to his party.)
Non ero sicuro che Marco avesse ricevuto il mio messaggio.
(I wasn't sure that Marco had received my message.)
Sembrava che non avesse dormito per niente.
(It seemed like he hadn't slept at all.)

It is used after certain connecting words to show that one past action happened before another. These words link the two events in time.

Siamo partiti prima che la pioggia fosse iniziata.
(We left before the rain had started.)
Ha continuato a giocare nonostante si fosse fatto male.
(He continued playing despite having gotten hurt.)
Lo ha fatto senza che io avessi detto nulla.
(She did it without me having said anything.)
Tutto è andato bene, benché all'inizio avessimo avuto qualche problema.
(Everything went well, although we had had some problems at the beginning.)

It can also be used alone to express a strong wish or regret about something in the past. It often starts with the word Magari.

Magari avessi studiato di più!
(If only I had studied more!)
Magari non fosse piovuto ieri!
(I wish it hadn't rained yesterday!)
Magari fossi venuto con voi!
(If only I had come with you!)

Remember, this tense almost always describes an action that is "more past" than another action or thought. It connects two different points in the past.
