Introduction

This verb form is used to report what someone else has said about a future event or plan. It clearly shows that you are repeating another person's words or thoughts, not stating your own belief. You use it to distance yourself from the original statement.

The most common use is for reporting another person's statement about their future plans or intentions. You are simply repeating what someone said they will do later.

Er sagt, er werde uns morgen anrufen.
(He says he will call us tomorrow.)
(The company announced it would hire new employees.)
(My friend writes that she will come to visit on the weekend.)
(The politician explained that he would keep his promise.)

You can also use this form to report someone's prediction or assumption about a future event. It shows you are quoting their forecast, not making one yourself.

Der Wetterbericht meldet, es werde bald regnen.
(The weather report says it will rain soon.)
(The expert thinks the economy will grow next year.)
(The newspaper reports that the construction work will last for a long time.)

This form is used almost exclusively in formal and written language, such as in news articles or official reports. In everyday spoken German, people usually choose other ways to report what someone said about the future.
