Introduction
This verb form is used to talk about an action that happened before another action or situation in the past. It often appears after words that express feelings, doubts, or opinions about that earlier past event. Think of it as the "past of the past" from a personal or subjective point of view.
You use this form after verbs that express a personal feeling or opinion about a past event that happened even earlier. It shows how someone felt about something that had already occurred.
This form is very common after the phrase "como si" (as if). It describes how someone acted by comparing it to a past situation that was not real.
You use this form with "ojalá" to express a wish or regret about a past event. It talks about something you wish had happened differently.
This form can be used after expressions that express doubt or denial about an event that occurred in the deeper past.
You can also use this form after sequence words like "antes de que" (before) to describe an action relative to another past event from a subjective viewpoint.
You might also see this tense written with "-se" at the end (for example, "hubiese"). The "-ra" form ("hubiera") is much more common in everyday spoken Spanish.
