Passato remoto (Past Historic)
Practice conjugation drills
Introduction
This tense describes actions that happened and were completed in the past. The main idea is that the event feels distant and has no connection to the present. It is often called the "remote past" for this reason.
The most common use is for actions that happened a long time ago from the speaker's point of view. Think of events from childhood, or things that happened many years or decades ago.
This tense is standard for talking about historical events. You will see it constantly in books and articles about history.
In written stories like novels and fairy tales, this tense is the primary way to narrate the main actions. It creates the classic "once upon a time" feeling.
Be aware: In everyday spoken Italian, this tense can feel formal or literary. In many parts of Italy, especially the North, people almost always use a different past tense in conversation. However, in the South of Italy, this tense is used very frequently in speech, even for events that happened recently. So, what you hear in conversation will change depending on the region.
