Introduction

The Imperativ is used to tell someone to do something. You use it to give a direct command, make a request, or provide instructions. It is the "command form" of a verb.

The most common use is for giving direct commands or orders. This is when you want someone to perform an action immediately.

Komm jetzt hierher!
(Come here now!)
Sei leise!
(Be quiet!)
Macht eure Hausaufgaben!
(Do your homework!)
Hör auf!
(Stop it!)
Sprechen Sie langsamer.
(Speak slower.)
Steh auf!
(Stand up!)

You also use the Imperativ to give instructions or directions. This is very common in recipes, manuals, or when telling someone how to get somewhere.

Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann links.
(Go straight and then left.)
Nimm die nächste Straße rechts.
(Take the next street on the right.)
Gib das Mehl in die Schüssel.
(Put the flour into the bowl.)
Lies den Satz laut.
(Read the sentence aloud.)

To make a command sound more like friendly advice or a suggestion, you can add words like doch or mal. It softens the tone.

Probier mal den Kuchen!
(Go on, try the cake!)
Frag doch einfach deine Kollegin.
(Why don't you just ask your colleague?)
Nimm einen Schirm mit, es regnet.
(Take an umbrella with you, it's raining.)

When you add the word bitte, a command becomes a polite request. This is extremely common in everyday German.

Geben Sie mir bitte das Salz.
(Please give me the salt.)
Hilf mir bitte.
(Please help me.)
Machen Sie bitte die Tür zu.
(Please close the door.)
Wiederholen Sie das bitte.
(Please repeat that.)

Choosing the correct form is very important for politeness. Use the formal "Sie" form with strangers, in business settings, or to show respect. Using the informal "du" form with someone you should address formally can be considered rude.

The Imperativ is also used for warnings and prohibitions, often to prevent something bad from happening.

Pass auf! Das Auto kommt schnell.
(Watch out! The car is coming fast.)
Fass das nicht an! Es ist heiß.
(Don't touch that! It's hot.)
Lauf nicht so schnell!
(Don't run so fast!)

Finally, you will hear the Imperativ in common phrases for wishes or encouragement.

Hab einen schönen Tag!
(Have a nice day!)
Schlaf gut!
(Sleep well!)
Mach's gut!
(Take care!)
