Introduction

This verb form is used to talk about the past. It describes something that did not happen, but we can imagine it. Think of it as an imaginary past or a different version of past events that is now impossible.

The most common use is to talk about an imaginary past situation and its imaginary result. These sentences often use the word wenn (if) to set up a past situation that was not real. This pattern shows what would have been different.

Wenn ich mehr Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich länger geblieben.
(If I had had more time, I would have stayed longer.)
Er hätte das Rennen gewonnen, wenn er nicht gestürzt wäre.
(He would have won the race if he had not fallen.)
Wenn wir das gewusst hätten, hätten wir dir geholfen.
(If we had known that, we would have helped you.)
Sie wäre mit uns ins Kino gekommen, wenn sie nicht krank gewesen wäre.
(She would have come to the movies with us if she had not been sick.)
Wenn du mich gefragt hättest, hätte ich dir die Wahrheit gesagt.
(If you had asked me, I would have told you the truth.)

This form is also perfect for expressing wishes about the past. You are saying you wish a past event had been different. These sentences often include words like doch or nur, which work like "if only" in English.

Wäre ich doch nur zu Hause geblieben!
(If only I had stayed home!)
Hätte ich damals mehr aufgepasst!
(If only I had paid more attention back then!)
Wären wir doch schneller gefahren!
(If only we had driven faster!)
Hätte sie das nur gewusst!
(If only she had known that!)

You can use this form to make polite criticism or suggestions about a past action. It sounds much softer and less direct than a simple statement about what someone did wrong.

Ich hätte das anders gemacht.
(I would have done that differently.)
Du hättest uns vorher anrufen können.
(You could have called us beforehand.)
Man hätte vorsichtiger sein müssen.
(One should have been more careful.)

Another use is for imaginary comparisons. This describes how someone acts or looks by comparing it to an unreal past event. This pattern almost always uses the words als ob (as if).

Er redete, als ob nichts passiert wäre.
(He talked as if nothing had happened.)
Sie tat so, als ob sie uns nicht gesehen hätte.
(She acted as if she hadn't seen us.)
Du siehst müde aus, als ob du gestern nicht geschlafen hättest.
(You look tired, as if you hadn't slept yesterday.)

Remember, this verb form always deals with a past that did not happen. It is for looking back and imagining a different reality that is no longer possible.
