Contribution vs. apport

While both contribution and apport can be translated as "contribution" in English, they are not interchangeable in French. Contribution generally refers to the act of participating in a collective effort, whereas apport refers to the action of bringing a specific, often tangible, asset or valuable element to a project or company.

A contribution is a part given to a common effort or fund. It emphasizes participation, doing one's share, or adding to something collectively. It can be financial, intellectual, or physical.

Apport

B2
An apport is something concrete or valuable that is brought to a situation. It has a strong legal and business connotation, referring to the assets (cash, goods, skills) a shareholder brings to a company. More generally, it signifies a valuable element that enriches something.
Pour créer la société, son apport en capital était de 20 000 euros.

Summary

In essence, use contribution when talking about participating in a shared goal or paying a required share (like a tax or fee). Use apport when referring to bringing a specific asset—especially money, property, or expertise—to a new venture or project. A simple way to think about it is that a contribution is what you *add to* something, while an apport is what you *bring to* it.
