Démangeaison vs. prurit

While démangeaison and prurit both translate to itch or itching, they are not interchangeable. The primary difference lies in their register and context: one is for everyday use, and the other is a technical, medical term.

Démangeaison

A2
Démangeaison is the common, everyday word for an itch or itching. It describes the physical sensation and is used by everyone in daily conversation. It can refer to any type of itch, from a simple insect bite to a more persistent condition, and is often used in the plural (des démangeaisons).

Prurit

B2
Prurit is the formal, medical, and scientific term for itching. It is used by healthcare professionals like doctors, dermatologists, and pharmacists to refer to itching as a clinical symptom or condition. You would find this word in medical reports, scientific articles, or on medication packaging, but almost never in casual conversation.
Le patient se plaint d'un prurit sévère sur tout le corps.
(The patient complains of severe pruritus over his entire body.)

(The doctor must determine the underlying cause of the pruritus to prescribe the right treatment.)

Summary

In short, use démangeaison when you talk to friends, family, or in any informal setting about the feeling of being itchy. Use prurit when you are in a medical context, such as speaking with a doctor, reading a medical document, or describing a formal symptom. It is the direct equivalent of the English medical term pruritus.
