Distinguer vs. discerner
While both distinguer and discerner can be translated as to make out or to discern, they are not fully interchangeable. The key difference lies in whether the act of perception is primarily a physical, sensory challenge or a more abstract, intellectual one.
Distinguer
B1Distinguer primarily refers to the physical act of making something out with the senses, most often sight or hearing. It implies successfully separating an object, shape, or sound from its background, often in difficult conditions like distance, darkness, fog, or noise. It's about sensory perception and identification.
Dans le brouillard, il était difficile de distinguer la route.
(In the fog, it was difficult to make out the road.)
De si loin, je ne peux pas distinguer les traits de son visage.
(From so far away, I cannot make out the features of his face.)

(I have trouble making out his voice with all this music.)

(The two twins look so much alike that I can't tell them apart.)

(At dawn, one could barely distinguish the outlines of the mountains.)
Discerner
C1Discerner emphasizes a more intellectual or mental perception. It's about understanding or identifying something subtle, abstract, or hidden through insight, reflection, and judgment. While it can relate to the senses, it always carries a stronger connotation of mental processing and comprehension.
Il est parfois difficile de discerner la vérité du mensonge.
(It is sometimes difficult to discern the truth from a lie.)
L'enquêteur a su discerner le mobile du crime.
(The investigator was able to discern the motive for the crime.)

Summary
In essence, use distinguer for a sensory challenge: successfully seeing or hearing something that is physically hard to perceive (e.g., a ship on the horizon). Use discerner for a mental or intellectual challenge: understanding something that is subtle, hidden, or abstract (e.g., someone's true intentions). Distinguer is about the senses; discerner is about the mind.
