Obstacle vs. entrave vs. empêchement

While the French words obstacle, entrave, and empêchement can all be translated as hindrance or obstacle, they are not interchangeable. They describe different types of difficulties: obstacle is a general barrier, entrave is something that slows or restricts, and empêchement is a definitive block.

Obstacle

B1
An obstacle is the most common and general term. It refers to a physical or figurative barrier that stands in the way of a goal. It is something that one must go around, get over, or remove to continue.

Entrave

B2
An entrave is a hindrance that restricts, slows down, or complicates progress. It suggests being shackled or burdened, limiting one's freedom of action. It makes a task more difficult but not necessarily impossible.

Empêchement

B1
An empêchement is a definitive reason or circumstance that completely prevents an action from taking place. It implies an impossibility, often due to a formal rule, a conflicting obligation, or a sudden, unforeseen problem.
J'ai eu un empêchement de dernière minute, je ne peux donc pas assister à la fête.
(I had a last-minute problem, so I cannot attend the party.)

(A scheduling conflict is a major impediment to our meeting.)

Summary

In essence: You overcome an obstacle. You are slowed down by an entrave. You are stopped cold by an empêchement. An obstacle is a challenge to be met, an entrave is a burden that slows you down, and an empêchement is a definitive showstopper.
