Terrain vs. parcelle

While both terrain and parcelle can be translated as plot of land in English, they are not interchangeable. Terrain is a very general term for land, whereas parcelle refers to a more specific, often administratively defined, piece of land.

Terrain

A2
This is the most general and common word for a piece of land, ground, or an area designated for a specific activity. It describes the land in a broad sense, whether for construction, sports, or simply its physical nature.
Nous avons acheté un terrain pour construire notre maison.
(We bought a plot of land to build our house.)
Attention, le terrain est glissant à cause de la pluie.
(Be careful, the ground is slippery because of the rain.)

(The children are playing on the soccer field behind the school.)

(It's very rough terrain, difficult for hiking.)

(The company has lost ground against its competitors.)

Parcelle

B2
This word refers to a specific, clearly defined plot or parcel of land. It is often used in administrative, legal, real estate, or agricultural contexts. A parcelle is typically a subdivision of a larger piece of land (terrain).
Le grand terrain a été divisé en dix parcelles à vendre.
(The large piece of land was divided into ten plots for sale.)
Cette parcelle est enregistrée au cadastre sous le numéro AH-254.
(This parcel of land is registered in the land registry under the number AH-254.)

(The farmer grows vegetables on this small plot.)

(The forest is managed plot by plot to preserve biodiversity.)

Summary

In essence, terrain is the general word for land or ground. Think of it as the main area. Parcelle is a specific, defined section of that land, often with legal or administrative boundaries. A large terrain can be composed of several parcelles, but a parcelle is just one division of a terrain.
