Voir vs. regarder

In French, while both voir and regarder are related to the sense of sight, they are not interchangeable. The core difference lies in the level of intention and focus, much like the distinction between "to see" and "to look at" or "to watch" in English.

Voir

A1
Voir describes the passive act of perceiving something with your eyes. It is the physical capability of sight, often happening without conscious effort or intention. It is the direct equivalent of "to see". It can also be used to mean "to meet someone" or "to understand".
Sans mes lunettes, je ne vois rien.
(Without my glasses, I can't see anything.)
(When I open the window, I see the Eiffel Tower.)
(I saw a friend at the supermarket by chance.)
(Ah, I see what you mean now.)
(We are going to see family for the holidays.)
(Did you see how nice the weather is today?)

Regarder

A1
Regarder is an active and intentional verb. It means to deliberately direct your eyes towards something and pay attention to it. It requires focus and concentration. It is the equivalent of "to look at" or "to watch".
Regarde ce magnifique tableau !
(Look at this magnificent painting!)
(We watch a movie every Friday night.)
(The teacher asks the students to look at the board.)
(The cat spends hours watching the birds through the window.)
Pourquoi tu me regardes comme ça ?
(Why are you looking at me like that?)
(Before crossing the street, you must look left and right.)

Summary

In essence, voir is about passive perception (to see) – it is what your eyes register, often unintentionally. In contrast, regarder is about active observation (to look at, to watch) – it is what you consciously choose to focus your attention on. A simple way to remember is: you might voir a crowd of people, but you decide to regarder a specific person within that crowd.
