Bairro vs. distrito
While both words can be translated as district or area, they operate on different scales. Bairro refers to a neighborhood or a specific social zone within a city, whereas distrito is a strict administrative or political division established by the government.
Bairro
A2This is the most common term for a specific area within a city, directly equivalent to neighborhood. It refers to a residential community, a commercial zone, or a culturally distinct part of town. When English speakers say Financial District or Red Light District, the correct Portuguese translation is almost always bairro.

In Portugal, a distrito is a very large regional province (like a state). You rarely use this word in casual conversation unless discussing laws, voting zones, police jurisdictions, or official geography.
