In European Portuguese (Portugal), discoteca is the standard, everyday word for a nightclub where people go to dance. However, in Brazil, discoteca sounds dated and old-fashioned; it is generally reserved for venues with a retro 1970s/80s theme or when talking about that specific era of disco music.
