Cabide vs. cabideiro

While both words relate to organizing and hanging clothes, the distinction lies in whether the object holds a single garment or supports the collection of garments. Cabide is the individual tool, whereas cabideiro is the larger structure or furniture.

Cabide

A2
Cabide refers to a hanger or coat hanger. It is the individual, portable object usually shaped like a triangle or a hook that you put inside a shirt, jacket, or pair of pants to prevent them from wrinkling.
Você tem um cabide de madeira para este terno?
(Do you have a wooden hanger for this suit?)
Por favor, coloque a camisa no cabide depois de passar.
(Please put the shirt on the hanger after ironing.)
Infelizmente o cabide de plástico quebrou com o peso do casaco.
(Unfortunately the plastic hanger broke under the weight of the coat.)

Cabideiro

B1
Cabideiro refers to a coat rack, hat stand, or clothes rail. It is the piece of furniture (often standing near a door), a row of hooks attached to a wall, or the horizontal bar inside a closet where you hang your hangers.
Pendure seu chapéu no cabideiro ao entrar.
(Hang your hat on the coat rack when you enter.)
O cabideiro do meu armário caiu porque tinha muita roupa.
(The closet rail in my wardrobe fell because there were too many clothes.)
Compramos um cabideiro de metal para colocar no corredor.
(We bought a metal coat stand to put in the hallway.)

Summary

Think of the relationship between the two objects: you place the cabide (hanger) onto the cabideiro (rail or rack). The cabide holds the clothes directly, while the cabideiro supports the hangers or acts as a stand with hooks for multiple items.
