Concerto vs. conserto

The Portuguese words concerto and conserto are classic homophones: they are pronounced identically but have different spellings and completely distinct meanings. Understanding their difference is key to avoiding common mistakes in writing.

Concerto

A2
The word concerto refers to a musical performance, typically by an orchestra, a band, or a solo artist. In a more formal or figurative sense, it can also mean an agreement, harmony, or accord.

(The tickets for that rock band's concert sold out in a few hours.)

(The singing of the birds in the morning is a true concert of nature.)
Foi necessário um concerto de vontades entre os países para alcançar a paz.
(An agreement of wills between the countries was necessary to achieve peace.)

Conserto

A2
The word conserto refers to the act of repairing or fixing something that is broken, damaged, or not working properly. It is the noun form related to the verb consertar (to fix/to repair).
O conserto do meu telemóvel vai custar mais do que um novo.
(The repair of my mobile phone will cost more than a new one.)
A máquina de lavar roupa precisa de um conserto urgente.
(The washing machine needs an urgent repair.)

Summary

In short, use concerto (with a c) for a musical performance or harmony. Use conserto (with an s) for a repair or a fix. A simple mnemonic is: C for Canto (singing) and S for Solução (solution/fix).
