Orgulho vs. soberba

While both orgulho and soberba can be translated as pride in English, they carry significantly different connotations in Portuguese. Orgulho is a versatile term that can be either positive or negative, while soberba is almost exclusively negative, referring to destructive arrogance and haughtiness.

Orgulho

A2
Orgulho most often describes a positive feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those one is close to, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired. It can also refer to a healthy sense of self-respect and dignity. However, it can take on a negative meaning when it becomes excessive, leading to stubbornness or an unwillingness to admit fault.
(She felt great pride upon receiving her diploma.)
(I am very proud of my parents for what they have achieved.)
Ele tem orgulho das suas origens humildes.
(He is proud of his humble origins.)

(His pride prevents him from asking for help, even when he clearly needs it.)
(Don't let hurt pride ruin a long-standing friendship.)

Soberba

B2
Soberba is a strong, negative term that refers to an excessive and unreasonable belief in one's own superiority. It describes arrogance, haughtiness, and contempt for others. It is one of the seven deadly sins (hubris) and implies looking down on people, considering them inferior.
(Arrogance was the cause of his downfall in the business world.)
(He treats his employees with haughtiness, as if they were insignificant.)

(In Greek mythology, the hubris of heroes was often punished by the gods.)

Summary

In short, use orgulho for positive pride related to achievements, identity, and self-worth, or for a milder, negative pride like stubbornness. Use soberba exclusively for the negative and destructive qualities of arrogance, contempt for others, and a sense of superiority. A good way to remember is to associate orgulho with pride and soberba with hubris or haughtiness.
