Introduction

This tense is used to talk about the past. It shows that one action happened before another action in the past. Think of it as the "past in the past". It helps you tell stories in the correct order.

The most common use is to show a sequence of events. You use this tense for the action that happened first. The action that happened second is usually in a different past tense.

Nachdem er die Hausaufgaben gemacht hatte, spielte er Fußball.
(After he had done the homework, he played soccer.)
Ich hatte schon gegessen, als du ankamst.
(I had already eaten when you arrived.)
Sie war schon gegangen, bevor ich anrufen konnte.
(She had already left before I could call.)
Er war müde, weil er schlecht geschlafen hatte.
(He was tired because he had slept poorly.)
Wir hatten das Buch gelesen, deshalb kannten wir die Geschichte schon.
(We had read the book, therefore we already knew the story.)

Sometimes, this tense is used for a single action that happened in the more distant past. The "second action" is often not stated, but understood as the time of the storytelling itself.

Er hatte früher in Hamburg gelebt.
(He had lived in Hamburg before.)
Das hatte ich total vergessen.
(I had totally forgotten that.)

In everyday spoken German, people often use the simple past (Perfekt) instead of this tense, even when talking about a "past before the past". This tense is more common in writing and formal speech.
