Bauchgefühl vs. Ahnung vs. Vermutung

While the German words Bauchgefühl, Ahnung, and Vermutung can all be translated as a hunch or gut feeling, they carry distinct nuances. The difference lies in the source of the feeling: Bauchgefühl is a physical intuition, Ahnung is a mental premonition, and Vermutung is a rational assumption.

Bauchgefühl

B2
This literally translates to belly feeling and refers to a pure gut feeling or intuition. It is a deep, visceral, and emotional sensation that is not based on logic or evidence, but on how a person or situation makes you feel physically and instinctively.
(My gut feeling tells me that I should not trust this person.)
(I accepted the job offer because I immediately had a good gut feeling about it.)
(Although all the facts were correct, I had a bad gut feeling about the deal.)

Ahnung

A2
An Ahnung is a premonition, a suspicion, or a vague inkling. It's less of a physical sensation and more of a mental one. It often relates to a future event or a hidden truth you suspect without knowing why. It is also very commonly used in the negative to mean no idea.
(I have a hunch that it will rain later today.)
(She had no idea that a surprise party was waiting for her.)
(For a long time I had a suspicion that he wasn't telling the truth.)

Vermutung

B2
A Vermutung is the most rational of the three words. It is an assumption, a guess, or a conjecture that is based on some observation, incomplete evidence, or logical deduction. It's a product of thought, not just a feeling.
(My assumption is that the culprit entered through the open window.)
(The police expressed the conjecture that it was an accident.)
(This is just a guess, but I believe the flight will be delayed because of the fog.)

Summary

In short: Use Bauchgefühl for a deep, emotional, and physical gut feeling. Use Ahnung for a mental premonition or suspicion about the future or a hidden fact. Use Vermutung for a rational assumption or guess based on some form of evidence or logic.
