Dunkel vs. düster

While both dunkel and düster can be translated as dark in English, they carry different connotations. Dunkel is a neutral term for the absence of light, whereas düster implies a negative, gloomy, or menacing atmosphere.

Dunkel

A1
Dunkel is the most common and neutral word for dark. It literally describes a low level or absence of light. It can also be used to describe dark colors, a deep sound, or something that is vague, unclear or mysterious.

Düster

B1
Düster also means dark, but it carries a strong negative connotation. It describes a darkness that is gloomy, somber, menacing, depressing, or bleak. It is used to describe a mood, atmosphere, or outlook rather than just a simple lack of light.
Der alte Friedhof hatte eine düstere Atmosphäre.
(The old cemetery had a gloomy atmosphere.)

Summary

In short, use dunkel for a neutral description of darkness, such as a dark room, dark hair, or a vague memory. Use düster when you want to convey a negative feeling of gloom, menace, or depression, such as a gloomy forest, a bleak future, or somber thoughts. A room can be dunkel (without light), but if it feels scary, it becomes düster.
