Etwas vs. einige

While both etwas and einige can be translated as some in English, they are not interchangeable. The key distinction lies in whether you are referring to countable or uncountable nouns. Understanding this difference is crucial for using them correctly.

Etwas

A1
The word etwas means some, a little, or something. It is used with uncountable nouns (mass nouns like water, time, money) and abstract concepts. It is invariable, meaning it does not change its ending. Etwas can also function as a pronoun meaning something or as an adverb meaning somewhat or a little.
Ich möchte bitte etwas Wasser.
(I would like some water, please.)
Haben wir noch etwas Zeit?
(Do we still have some time?)
Für dieses Rezept braucht man etwas Geduld.
(You need a little patience for this recipe.)
Ich muss dir etwas Wichtiges sagen.
(I have to tell you something important.)
Der Film war etwas langweilig.
(The movie was a bit boring.)
Ist etwas passiert?
(Did something happen?)

Einige

A2
The word einige means some, a few, or several. It is used exclusively with countable nouns in the plural. Unlike etwas, einige must change its ending (be declined) to agree with the case of the noun it modifies, though its base form is common in many situations.
Ich habe einige Freunde in Berlin.
(I have a few friends in Berlin.)
Einige Leute sind mit dem Vorschlag nicht einverstanden.
(Some people do not agree with the proposal.)
Wir müssen noch einige Dinge kaufen.
(We still have to buy a few things.)
Der Lehrer hat einige Fragen gestellt.
(The teacher asked several questions.)
Nach einigen Minuten war alles vorbei.
(After a few minutes, it was all over.)
Von den Bewerbern wurden nur einige eingeladen.
(Only a few of the applicants were invited.)

Summary

The core difference is simple: use etwas for things you can't count (uncountable nouns) or when you mean the general concept of something. Use einige for things you can count (plural countable nouns). Think of etwas as a little bit of something and einige as a number of things.
