Helfen vs. mithelfen vs. unterstützen

The German verbs helfen, mithelfen, and unterstützen all translate to "to help" or "to assist," but they are not interchangeable. They differ in the nature of the help provided, the context in which they are used, and the relationship between the helper and the person or cause being helped.

Helfen

A1
helfen is the most common and general term for "to help". It typically implies direct, active, and often hands-on assistance to solve a specific problem or ease a difficulty. It is used in a wide range of situations, from simple favors to emergencies. It takes the dative case for the person being helped (jemandem helfen).
Kannst du mir bitte beim Tragen der Kisten helfen?
(Can you please help me carry the boxes?)
Die Sanitäter helfen dem verletzten Radfahrer.
(The paramedics are helping the injured cyclist.)
Er hat mir bei den Hausaufgaben geholfen.
(He helped me with the homework.)
Nichts hilft gegen meine schrecklichen Kopfschmerzen.
(Nothing helps against my terrible headache.)

Mithelfen

A2
mithelfen means to "help along" or "to pitch in". The prefix mit- (with) emphasizes that the help is part of a collective or shared effort. You are not the only one helping, but rather contributing your part to a task that others are also working on. The focus is on participation.
Beim Umzug haben alle Freunde mitgeholfen.
(All the friends helped out with the move.)
Willst du in der Küche mithelfen?
(Do you want to help out in the kitchen?)
Viele Freiwillige haben beim Aufräumen des Parks mitgeholfen.
(Many volunteers pitched in to clean up the park.)
Jeder kann mithelfen, die Umwelt zu schützen.
(Everyone can help to protect the environment.)

Unterstützen

B1
unterstützen translates to "to support" and is often more formal than helfen. It frequently implies providing backing or resources, such as financial, emotional, or moral support. The assistance can be less hands-on and more structural, long-term, or abstract. It takes the accusative case (jemanden/etwas unterstützen).
Meine Eltern unterstützen mich finanziell während meines Studiums.
(My parents support me financially during my studies.)
Die Stiftung unterstützt junge Künstler mit Stipendien.
(The foundation supports young artists with scholarships.)
Der Trainer muss die Mannschaft nach der Niederlage moralisch unterstützen.
(The coach has to support the team morally after the defeat.)
Ich unterstütze diesen politischen Vorschlag voll und ganz.
(I fully support this political proposal.)

Summary

In short: Use helfen for general, direct help (problem-solving). Use mithelfen when you are "pitching in" or helping as part of a group effort (participation). Use unterstützen for providing "support," which is often more formal and can be financial, moral, or institutional (backing).
