Cerchio vs. circolo

While both circolo and cerchio can be associated with the English word circle, they are not interchangeable in Italian. Cerchio refers to the geometric shape or a physical object with that shape, whereas circolo primarily denotes a club, an association, or the concept of circulation.

Cerchio

A2
Cerchio is the direct Italian word for the geometric shape of a circle. It can refer to the line itself (the circumference), the area it encloses, or any physical object with a round, ring-like shape. Figuratively, it can also mean a group of people arranged in a circle or a vicious circle.

(We sat in a circle around the fire.)

Circolo

B1
Circolo almost always refers to a social group, club, or association of people who share common interests, like a sports club or a cultural society. It also means circulation, as in the circulation of blood, traffic, or ideas. It is not used for the geometric shape.
Gioca a tennis in un circolo vicino a casa sua.
(He plays tennis at a club near his house.)

Summary

In short, use cerchio when referring to a literal geometric shape, a ring, a hoop, or a physical arrangement of people in a circle. Use circolo when talking about a social club, an association, or the abstract concept of circulation (of blood, traffic, ideas, etc.). Think of cerchio as a shape and circolo as a club or a system.
