Classe vs. lezione

While both Italian words classe and lezione can sometimes be translated as "class" in English, they refer to different concepts. Understanding their distinction is key to speaking Italian more accurately. Classe typically refers to the group of people or the physical place, whereas lezione refers to the instructional event or its content.

Classe

This word primarily refers to a group of students who study together, or the physical classroom where they meet. By extension, it can also mean social class or style, just like in English.

Lezione

A1
This word refers to the lesson itself — the block of time dedicated to teaching and learning a specific subject. It can also mean the content of that lesson or a private class, like for music or sports. Figuratively, it can mean a "life lesson".
La lezione di storia di oggi è stata affascinante.
(Today's history lesson was fascinating.)
A che ora finisce la tua lezione di italiano?

Summary

In short, classe is about the *who* (the group of students) and the *where* (the classroom). In contrast, lezione is about the *what* and the *when* (the teaching session and its content). A simple way to remember is: You attend a lezione (a lesson) inside a classe (a classroom) together with your classe (your class of fellow students).
