Cuocere vs. infornare

In Italian, while both cuocere and infornare can be related to baking, they are not interchangeable. Cuocere is the general term for to cook, while infornare refers to the specific action of putting food into an oven.

Cuocere

A2
This is the general verb for to cook. It encompasses all methods of applying heat to food, such as boiling, frying, grilling, roasting, and baking. When used in the context of baking, it refers to the entire cooking process that happens inside the oven, not just the act of putting it in.
(The cake needs to bake for about thirty minutes.)
A che temperatura devo cuocere il pane?
(At what temperature do I have to bake the bread?)
Metto a cuocere le verdure al vapore.
(I'm putting the vegetables on to steam cook.)
Come ti piace cuocere la bistecca?
(How do you like to cook the steak?)
(I am learning to cook fish on the grill.)

Infornare

B1
This verb literally means to put into the oven (in-forno-are). It describes only the specific, initial action of placing food into a hot oven to begin the baking or roasting process. It does not describe the cooking process itself.
Ho appena infornato la pizza.
(I have just put the pizza in the oven.)
(Remember to preheat the oven before you put the cookies in.)
È il momento di infornare la lasagna.
(It is time to put the lasagna in the oven.)
(The baker gets up early to put the fresh bread in the oven.)
(We are about to put the chicken in the oven for dinner.)

Summary

The key difference is one of general action versus specific action. Cuocere is the broad term to cook and describes the entire process of heat transforming food. Infornare is the specific, momentary act of putting food into the oven. In short, you first infornare (put in the oven) a cake, and then the cake begins to cuocere (bake/cook).
